I live in the Midlands. Whilst I grew up in the southwest, I soon became fed up with the fact that, beautiful although it was, anything of anywhere to hours and hours to reach. Isolation from all the big cities and all the fun things to do isn’t exactly what a teenager dreams of, and this is probably why after my degree I headed without hesitation into the central part of England.
What is interesting about the particular area of the Midlands that I have settled in is that it is actually more expensive to buy most things here than it is in the notoriously pricey South West. Despite the fact that Devon and Cornwall are known to be some of the most expensive areas in the country for property and general living, it seems to be that I managed to choose somewhere that was actually even more expensive than where I came from. Now how is that for bad luck?!
Nowhere was this price hike more apparent than when my girlfriend and I tried to buy a car earlier this year. We were shocked by how pricey some of them were, especially in comparison to the relatively affordable prices that they would charge back down south. This make it a lot more difficult to find a car that we were willing to pay the price for, and this was what led us to become incredibly familiar with all the car dealers in our local area. If we hadn’t done a bit of digging both on and offline then we would probably have only known about the dealers that were on our drive to work, and this would have made us far less likely to find a decent bargain!
Thankfully, however, we were savvy enough to know that research into local car dealers is the best policy when attempting to find a really rocking bargain on a car that you actually want. We started online, using tools like online car supermarkets, classified ads and local business maps to do a thorough sweep of all the different car dealers that we could find – all within an area that we were willing to drive to test out a car.
Once we knew what the area was like – the lay of the land, if you will – we launched ourselves into the research proper. We went meticulously through all the cars that were for sale online – and we also checked out the really local car dealers that didn’t have a website. Any further away that didn’t have a site were removed from the list. Then we drive around visiting the cars, looking at the prices and weighing up our options. It was a matter of finding something good, but not paying all that much at the same time – it is a delicate balancing act!
Then, all the boring research done, we embarked on test driving so many cars that I am sure we drove further than we have in the past year! It was worth it, however – as we actually found a car we wanted!
